Annapurna Circuit Trek 2026: Thorong La, Duration & Route Changes

Is the Annapurna Circuit still worth it in 2026? Yes. Despite road building on the lower valleys, the Annapurna Circuit remains one of the world’s great teahouse treks — a 12–18 day traverse of the Annapurna massif over Thorong La (5,416 m), from humid subtropical forests to Tibetan-influenced Manang and the Kali Gandaki gorge. Here’s what changed and how to plan it.

2026 route reality

Roads now reach Besisahar and, in places, farther toward Manang, so many trekkers start higher (e.g. Jagat or Chame) to skip dusty driving. The upper route — Manang → Thorong Phedi → Thorong La → Muktinath — is unchanged and still requires proper acclimatization.

Style Days Note
Full circuit (Besisahar start) 18–21 More road walking
Upper circuit (drive to Chame) 12–14 Skips lower road
With Tilicho Lake side trip +3 High alpine lake at 4,919 m

The crossing is long (up to 8–9 hours) and cold. Most start before dawn from Thorong Phedi or High Camp. Weather windows matter — passes can close in heavy snow.

Permits

  • ACAP: NPR 3,000 foreigners.
  • TIMS card: required.

Tips for a better circuit

  • Spend two nights in Manang (3,540 m) to acclimatize.
  • Consider the Tilicho Lake detour if weather allows.
  • Book teahouses in peak October early.

FAQ

How difficult is Thorong La?

Strenuous due to altitude and length, but non-technical. Fitness and acclimatization are the main determinants of success.

Can I do it in 10 days?

Only by driving most of the lower road and using a jeep for the return — not recommended for altitude safety. 12+ days is healthier.

When to go?

October–November is the classic window; March–April is the second-best. Avoid deep winter for Thorong La.
