Pokhara sits on the shore of Phewa Lake with the Annapurna massif filling the northern skyline — and on a clear morning the reflection of Machhapuchhre in the water is the image most people carry home from Nepal. It is the country’s second city in tourist terms and its adventure capital: paragliding from Sarangkot, white-water rafting on the Seti, zip-lining, ultra-light flights, and the trailhead for the Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal and Poon Hill treks.

It is also a genuinely pleasant place to do nothing for a few days. Lakeside is a strip of cafés, bookshops and gear stores; the old bazaar is where people actually live; the World Peace Pagoda looks back over the lake from the southern ridge. Base here before or after a trek, and you get warm low-altitude air, real coffee and a mountain view that costs nothing.

Why go

Mountain views without walking — Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Dhaulagiri from your breakfast table.
Adventure sports at a fraction of alpine prices — tandem paragliding, rafting, zip-flyer, ultralight flights.
Trek staging post — every Annapurna trek starts within an hour’s drive of Lakeside.
Lake life — kayaking, paddle-boarding, sunrise boat trips to the Barahi temple.

Practical planning

When to go

October–November for the clearest mountain views; March–April for warmth, paragliding thermals and rhododendron. December–February gives cold, clear mornings and cheap rooms. Monsoon (June–September) hides the mountains but keeps the lake full and the hills green.

Getting there

Pokhara International Airport (PKR) has limited international service; most people fly from Kathmandu in 25 minutes or take a tourist bus (7–9 hours, USD 12–20) or a private car (5–6 hours). The road between Kathmandu and Pokhara has improved and the bus is now a reasonable option.

What it costs

Guesthouses USD 15–30, mid-range lakeside hotels USD 40–90. Paragliding USD 70–110, rafting USD 40–70, ultralight USD 120–200. A day of taxis and boats stays under USD 30.

Where to stay

Lakeside (Baidam) for views and nightlife, Lakeside north for quiet, the old bazaar for local life and cheap food. Sarangkot for one sunrise night if you want the view without the 5 am drive.

Practical note

Pokhara is the permit and logistics base for Annapurna treks — ACAP and TIMS are issued at the Nepal Tourism Board office here, and gear shops rent down jackets and sleeping bags for a few dollars a day.

Questions travellers ask

How many days should I spend in Pokhara?

Three days: one for the lake and Peace Pagoda, one for Sarangkot sunrise plus paragliding, one for a day hike or the International Mountain Museum. Add a night before and after any trek.

Is paragliding in Pokhara safe?

It is one of the most established tandem paragliding scenes in the world, with certified pilots and daily flights from Sarangkot. Fly in the morning for thermals and views, check that your pilot is insured, and avoid the monsoon months.

Can I trek from Pokhara without a guide?

For Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal and Poon Hill you can trek independently with ACAP and a TIMS card. Many people still hire a porter-guide from Pokhara for USD 25–35 a day.

Pokhara or Kathmandu first?

Pokhara first if you are trekking — you acclimatise gently at 827 m, sort permits, then walk. Kathmandu first if you want the heritage sites before the trail dust.

Does Pokhara have an international airport?

Yes, Pokhara International Airport opened in 2023, but international routes remain limited. Most visitors still connect through Kathmandu.
